The Firsts played Adamstown CC in a pre-season friendly on Sunday last. Bowling first Knockharley restricted Adamstown to a modest 135 all out off 35 overs. Wickets were shared between Harry, Mark, Shoaib, Kashif and Dave. In reply Mark and Shoaib got KCC off to a flyer before the inevitable collapse saw KCC home by 1 wicket with thanks to Harry and Sim's last wicket partnership. A good workout and thanks to Adamstown for hosting.
The club are having a registration evening for new and youth players this Tuesday (10th April) from 6-730pm in the clubhouse. Prospective players will be able to sign up for the coming season. The junior fixtures will be available for the U-13 and U-15 teams. The fixtures for the new season are now available on www.cricketleinster.ie |

A Eulogy to Peter Cooke
8th December 2011.
Everyone at some time in their life should meet a “Peter Cooke” for to miss out on that opportunity would be to miss one of life’s true ambassadors. Words such as caring, modest, committed, charming, devoted, welcoming, funny and witty, do not do justice in expressing what an inspirational man Peter Cooke was to those whose lives he touched.
We all have different, yet similar, experiences of this great, great man, we can dwell happily on how he would take a strangers arm and within seconds they would feel like a long lost friend, or how he would stubbornly get stuck into something and not give in until he had reached his goal no matter how much to his own detriment.
But we are here to celebrate the life of a man who though he cheated death so many times has eventually had his middle stump bowled out and with his head held high has walked his last steps back to the clubhouse, to resounding applause, with his cricket bat held high, and to await his next innings in heaven, where he will never be given out again.
I’d like to share a poem I wrote in Peter’s honour and is a dedication to my friend: It’s called:
“The Impartially Deaf Umpire”
“Howwzzat !, Howwzzatt !,”
We gave Cookie a shout !!
“You what ? pardon ?
That’s definitely NOT OUT”
For Cookie had forgotten he’d become a bit deaf,
As cricket balls flew past him to right and to left.
To umpire one needs eyes as sharp as a bird,
But for poor Cookie the snicks remained mainly unheard,
But his charm and his wit and his ever big grin
Would sort out a ruckus before it’d begin.
Then later at Macs over a cold pint of beer
He’d turn and he’d grin: “I actually did hear !”,
We’d quiz him and ask him “Oh Cookie but why?”
His moustache would bristle with a glint in his eye..
He’d say “dear friend you were just out of luck,
Its my payment back for getting a duck!!”
So his long stride and smile we won’t see again,
But his warm hearted spirit remains deep, deep within,
For those who knew him and loved him for sure,
Pad up, bat on, hit sixes galore!
Many of you will be saddened by the manner and speed in which our dear friend Peter has departed this life, some of you will be saddened that you didn’t get to say goodbye. I was privileged and honoured to spend the most important 2 hours of my life with Peter last Sunday week in Beaumont, the week before he died and wish to share some very intimate moments that we shared, as a way of him being able to say goodbye to you all.
What struck Peter more than anything was how kind people were being to him, “How could people be saying that about me ?” he said to me as he referred to his huge array of cards from well-wishers and texts he’d had on his phone” his modesty astounded me as did his humility at feeling he didn’t deserve all these kind comments.
Peter and I talked deeply about how unfair it had been on him that he had run into this trail of bad luck with his health and how he was only 12 hours from death when they diagnosed the leukaemia. To Peter he felt he had cheated death once more but I think we both knew and accepted that he was on God’s stopwatch now. He shared how pleased and privileged he was that Canon Clarke had visited him and that how when he got out of hospital he was going to try and go back to church, this church in Navan. I think he felt that he needed to be seen in the church to make his peace with God. It was then I realised and knew that Peter’s and my guardian angels had been in contact and had meant that I was to be there with Peter. I said to Peter that God loved him wherever he was and that the church was a body of Gods people and not a physical building. I said to Peter “if most people who were church goers or not lived as practical a Christian life as you, then the world would be so much a better place”.
We at this stage held hands, tears in both our eyes and I asked if he minded if I said a prayer for him.. I thanked God for Peter, his life and for all he was and to protect him whatever was going to happen”…He then got up to smile and wave to his two beautiful grandchildren at the window in the ward and you could see the most unimaginable love and pride beaming out from Peter towards Graham and his family.
We joked about cricket and how I was starting up a new Celtic Cricket League in the North-west of Ireland and how Peter had been such a positive influence of myself and my brother David, helping us to settle into the club and thus helping us make so many friends. So many people will understand this quality in Peter.
I told Peter that came what may, we would be dedicating a cup from us to a cricket cup competition in his name. He turned to me, and said “you would do that for me??...I would love that”. I can find no better way to remember and honour my friend, and my inspiration to live life to its fullest. So Cheers Peter…I’ll join you one day in heaven to share a drink from the cup!!.
I left the hospital, not feeling sad, but feeling a great sense of peace. Peters time was coming to an end but like all great games of cricket and great cricketers their memory lives on through the endless scorebooks, fellow players, opponents, friends, and the club of Knockharley Cricket Club, to which he was its foundation and cornerstone.
As a token of Peter’s affection to cricket and sport I am presenting my first and cricket bat which I used when I first met Peter and have treasured since. I would like the Cooke family to have this to accompany Peter on his onward journey.
Dear Peter, colleague, clubman, father, grandfather, husband and friend may God bless your spirit as you live forever in our hearts, AMEN.

Congrats to George Angel on winning the 2011 Player of the Year award, George led the Leinster bowling rankings last Summer and has been one of the club's most consistent bowlers in the last 5-10 years.
Kashif Ali collected the Young player of the year award, Kashif is one of our most promising youth players and has recently been training with the Leinster U-14 squad along with Harry Shivmangal and Sim Singh. It is with great sadness that the club announces the passing of Peter Cooke. Cookie as he was affectionately known was a founder member of the club and was the heartbeat behind the club since its formation over 25 years ago. Peter performed every role in the club from captain to groundsman to fixture secretary and Umpire. He was an absolute gentleman and will be so sorely missed. God bless and rest in peace Peter. |
